Kenya introduces new banknotes to curb corruption

Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced that the country's currency is to be replaced with a new generation of banknotes. Kenyans must return their 1,000 shilling ($10; £8) notes to banks by 1 October, in a bid to fight money laundering, counterfeits and corruption. New currency is to be brought in over the coming months with other denominations being phased out gradually.

Ayade donates N1m to inmate who delivered twins in Calabar Prison

GOV. Ben Ayade of Cross River has donated N1 million and other gift items to the management of the General Hospital Calabar for the upkeep of the prison inmate who gave birth to twins at the hospital on Thursday April 18. Ayade, who was represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Inyang Asibong, said on Saturday in Calabar that the gesture was a special Easter gift to the mother of the twins; a boy and girl.

Anambra Govt Storm Onitsha Streets, Arrests Beggars, Mentally Deranged Persons

The apprehended beggars, operating at both Onitsha Main Market and Upper Iweka, were mostly women, presumed to be using ‘hired’ children to carry out their businesses. The raid is part of the initiatives of the Anambra Government to get rid of beggars and mentally sick persons on the streets. They were taken to the Nteje Rehabilitation Center for treatment.

NEMA deploys 7 chartered buses, others for Libyan returnees

The Lagos Territorial Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said it has mobilized seven chartered buses apart from providing food, water and accommodation to Libyan returnees on arrival in Lagos. It’s been reported that no fewer than 12,974 have been repatriated in the last two years through the Joint efforts of the European Union & IOM. More are still being expected in the weeks to come.

Journalist arrested, charged under cybercrime law in Nigeria

Mr Norman, owner and editor-in-chief of online news outlet The Realm News, was arrested on March 1 by police in Umuahia, the capital of Nigeria’s southeastern Abia state, while he was at local radio station Flo FM to discuss politics on air, according to the journalist, who spoke to CPJ from Afara prison in Umuahia. The day he was arrested, Mr Norman was charged in an Abia state magistrate court under Nigeria’s 2015 cybercrime act, he told CPJ.
