The apprehended beggars, operating at both Onitsha Main Market and Upper Iweka, were mostly women, presumed to be using ‘hired’ children to carry out their businesses.
The raid is part of the initiatives of the Anambra Government to get rid of beggars and mentally sick persons on the streets.
They were taken to the Nteje Rehabilitation Center for treatment.
At least six persons, including two students of Nneoma Secondary School, Otolo Nnewi, have been reported dead and several others injured in multiple auto accidents that occurred in the early hours of Thursday, February 21, along Akwudo Junction in Nnewi, Anambra State.
It was reported that a soakaway truck collided with a truck carrying gallons of palm oil. The small truck then crashed into another big truck conveying varieties of brands of the Nigerian Breweries beer parked by the roadside along the junction.

According to reports, some hoodlums who were allegedly hired to assassinate the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, have been apprehended.
It was gathered that the thugs were nabbed over the weekend in Alor community in Anambra state (the minister's hometown) following the elections which was postponed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by one week.
Some hoodlums have allegedly set on fire, a police station in Ajali, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The hoodlums also set free some prisoners after beating up some police officers, reports have claimed.
Photos from the scene show that the police building was almost, totally burnt while at least two police patrol vans were equally burnt.
