Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS, is dead after a U.S.-led raid in Syria, President Trump confirmed on Sunday. After Baghdadi was cornered in a tunnel by U.S. forces, he killed himself and three of his children, detonating an explosive vest. No U.S. military personnel died in the raid. Trump said a large number of ISIS fighters and Baghdadi’s “companions” were killed.
“He was a sick and depraved man and now he’s gone,” Trump said during his announcement. “He died like a dog. He died like a coward. The world is a much safer place.”
